Over the summer I was hired to be a multimedia intern at the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). I did video and photography production documenting programs in the Middle Atlantic Region. One photograph, taken of youth participants in Washington D.C., made the cover of the AFSC seasonal newsletter, MarStar.

These photographs demonstrate how I create a painting. I build the painted surface through a practice of rich layering, working the entire canvas at once. I then structure the compositional elements with a negotiated process of trial and error. Finally, I focus on the details of my piece, defining and developing my subject matter through both paint and medium.

New studio!

I have finally unpacked my art supplies and moved into my new studio. While it doesn't have a window, it is nearly triple the size of my former studio. Time to get to work!

Last month I traveled to Ecuador with a nonprofit medical organization. Over the course of ten days, I documented the work of a team of healthcare professionals as they conducted free surgical procedures on children with severe orthopedic issues. From the hundreds of photographs I took during the medical mission, I have chosen to share the following images from that experience here.

Performance Installation with Photography, Video, and Crutch

Last April, I fell off a flight of stairs while on a boat in Thailand. For five weeks I hobbled around Southeast Asia in a hospital splint and donated magenta crutch.

During the journey, my physical impairment forced a gross reduction in the speed of my movements. Yet within this slow-motion gait, the repetitious footfall and clunk of the crutch fostered a rhythm that took on a meditative quality. I began to operate in an alternate time flow, detached from the pace by which the rest of the world inhabited.

Once more I seek to take a trip. It is an attempt to recapture that altered sense of temporality –this time within the clamor of the turbo-accelerated city of Manhattan.
